THANKFUL
And we're back...
As the world moves forward, amidst the struggle of a global pandemic, this post may be asking for something that is really hard to do.
Quite frankly, I think it is hard to do at any time.
It is incredibly hard to be thankful in the moment. Most high achievers are always pushing towards the next thing. What can I succeed at next? What is my next, new and exciting challenge?
Having general awareness about yourself and your situation is a skill. I know that as coach, one of the biggest traits that I look for in recruits is self-awareness. This allows an individual to have clarity with where they fit.
By no means am I saying that I am looking for people who are content. I want brown-nosed student-athletes that are over achievers and have a chip on their shoulder. However, having an awareness of your fit and place can provide clarity for improvement, planning, and goal-setting.
It is possible to enjoy the moment. Setting small goals - daily, hourly, session goals - will allow you to love what you are doing right now.
And isn't that the most important thing these days?
With all of the uncertainty of what tomorrow could bring, shouldn't we be thankful of what we have today?
Personally, this means I get to work with an amazing group of assistant coaches on a daily basis as we prepare for an upcoming season. It means I get to work with a group of student-athletes daily who are all interested in success, both on and off the basketball court. It also means I need to write in this blog more so that I can provide myself with clarity and purpose as we navigate through a season unlike anything we have had before.
So sit back and reflect. Look around at all of the good things that you have in life. There might be a few things that you are missing, or are taking for granted. Acknowledging those details will make you more appreciative.
A thankful appreciator. Another example of what a Daring Optimist could be.
Thanks for tuning in.
